Cyclists, have your say!

The Provo City Bicycle Facilities Master Plan Team could really, really use more responses to its survey before the end of the month. If you haven't already, would you please take the brief survey, found here, and share it with others? It asks how often you bike, which roads you would like to see bike lanes on, etc. Even if you don't bike, they want to hear from you.

Your Trip to the City Center

Customer Service is moving from the Provo City Power office to the City Center lobby. Remodeling started last week and will continue until early February. During that time, the public will need to use the east and south entrances to the building. Please keep that in mind as you come to meetings, etc. Also, council meetings (study and regular) during January will be held at the Provo School District office. There's more information about the Customer Service move on Mayor Curtis' blog here: http://provomayor.blogspot.com/2011/12/whats-happening-at-city-center.html.

Prevent a Holiday Disappointment

This message comes from our local Police:

We have been having an increase in vehicle burglaries, particularly in the Grandview South, Grandview North, and Carterville neighborhoods. The majority of these have been vehicles that were not locked with money and any property of value such as ipods, cell phones, etc being taken.

Would you please pass the word out in your neighborhoods for people to be vigilant in locking their vehicles, not leaving valuables visible in cars, closing garage doors at night, and not leaving out valuable property. With the majority of the vehicle burglaries and also larceny from residents, being property that was left out, we feel like the thieves are just targeting easy crimes of opportunity. Many are likely juveniles. So encourage people to call us with any suspicious activities or juveniles seen walking the streets after curfew which is 11:00 pm during the week for all minors and 1:00 am for 16 & 17 year olds Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks for your help and have a happy and safe holiday season.

Snow Days at School

I know it doesn't look much like a winter wonderland just now, but Provo School District is preparing policy for the coming winter storms. This message from our School Board member Kristine Manwaring:

In anticipation of a heavy winter, Provo School District is working to prepare schools and patrons for what could possibly be a "snow day." To keep from having to make up days during Spring Break, Provo School District will avoid closing schools for a complete snow day, if at all possible.

If a large storm does hit our city in the late evening or early morning, bus pick ups and school starting times may be set back exactly TWO hours later than the original times. This delayed start will give adequate time for snowplows to clear roads and ensure traveling is safe for all drivers in and around Provo City.

For example: A school regularly starting at 8:00 a.m. will start at 10:00 a.m on a Late Start Day. A regular bus pick up at 7:15 a.m. will be at 9:15 a.m on a Late Start Day.  ALL schools, however, will keep dismissal times as originally scheduled. Students will be released from school at the normally scheduled times they are accustomed to.

If you are unsure of whether or not a storm has warranted a Late Start Day, please check this Provo School District Web site for updated information regarding the status of the school day. If a notice has not been posted by 6:00 a.m., schools and bus routes will operate on the standard schedule. You can also check your local television news stations or your school for more details regarding the Late Start Day.  You may contact Laken Cannon at 801-228-7802 if you do not have television or Internet access in your home.
Thank you for helping your student understand these procedures. Happy Holidays!

Eagle Scout Project ideas

If you know of a prospective Eagle Scout in search of a project, have him contact Chris Blinzinger, Provo's Emergency Management Coordinator, at 801-404-6368 (Cell) or 801-852-6455 (Office).

Alternatively, the Governor's Office for Literacy has a need for book drives to provide gently used books to Title 1 schools in need. Call Deon Turley for more information on this. Deon 801-377-5668.

Prepare for 2012

The following may be of interest to you. The public is invited.
BYU is holding a "Brown Bag" lunchtime presentation (bring your own lunch!) on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 12:00 to 12:50 pm at 3224 WSC in the Wilkinson Student Center.  The presenter is Treena Bolingbroke, who will speak on "Simple Steps to Emergency Preparedness".

Summary:  Find peace in preparedness.  Learn firsthand from a natural disaster survivor some simple steps to being prepared:     What it is like to live through a disaster     What to expect in the first 72 hours     Aftermath of the catastrophe     How long it takes to get back services     Where do we begin to take care of
ourselves     Water, sewer, food, etc.     How do we begin to prepare

Treena has survived a tornado, an earthquake, and her house burning down.  She is the mother of 7, grandmother to 17 and great grandmother to 3.  She loves life and is not afraid of what is to come.
