The Rivalry Ride

Since BYU lost the rivalry game against the University of Utah, Mayor Curtis will bike from Provo to Salt Lake City on Friday, October 28, 2011, and you can join him. Bike six or 60 miles, your choice. If you don't want to bike all the way to Salt Lake City, you can bike the first three miles of the route to the new Lakeview Park and back. It's a great way to show your support for the food bank, biking, the Cougars, the Utes, football in general, and/or Mayor Curtis. Read more about it on the city website.

Family Fun at the Fair

Provo City will give away a $250 Frontier Airlines travel voucher and other prizes at its annual City Services Fair on September 19 from 4-7:30 p.m. in the south parking lot of the Provo Towne Centre mall, 1200 Towne Centre Blvd. The event is free and open to the public and will feature displays and demonstrations by several city departments. Macey's will sell hot dogs and drinks.

As in the past, the fair will include Provo City Power's bucket truck rides; Provo Fire & Rescue's fire suppression demonstrations, or "burn tree;" and a helicopter landing. Other attractions include police cars, fire engines, the Learn Not to Burn Trailer, a Utah Transit Authority bus and storytelling provided by the Provo City Library. There will also be games and displays on a variety of topics such as water and power conservation.

Provo City will give away several prizes throughout the night, including the travel voucher that can be used to fly from the Provo Municipal Airport to over 80 destinations around the country. Other giveaways include passes to city recreation facilities, books, and the nicest unclaimed bicycle from the city's found property inventory, picked out, cleaned off, and tuned up by the Provo Bike Committee. Attendees enter to win the prizes by getting a "passport" stamped at the booths of different city departments.

Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable bags to hold the treats, prizes and informational material from the fair, and a camera to take photos with McGruff, Smokey Bear and Zippy the Chipmunk.

More information is available at www.provo.org.

Attend the New Recreation Center Groundbreaking

You are invited to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Provo Recreation Center this Wednesday, August 24th, at 11 am. You will find it at 320 W 500 N, by the Veterans Memorial Pool.
You will have an opportunity to see the plans for the new center and meet those who are responsible for the plans and construction.  If you haven't already seen the drawings or heard about the new facility, you should definitely go. I think you will be pleased.
The park is close by; the weather should be nice; and light refreshments will be served! What more could you ask!

Bicycle to School this fall!

The Provo Bicycle Committee is planning to hold a Bike (or Walk) to School Week at all K-12 schools in Provo (and at BYU) the third week of September and they hope to find a parent at each school who is willing to organize the event at their particular school. If the school organizers want, Provo Bicycle Committee members can help them to organize bike rodeos, tune-ups, rides, etc.
Aaron Skabelund is looking for a volunteer to organize this event at Westridge Elementary.  If you or someone you know may be interested in doing this, contact him for more information.  Click on his name or call him at 801-857-1698.

Save the Date - New Recreation Center Groundbreaking

You will hear more in the future but for now, save the date if you would like to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Provo Recreation Center.

August 24th, 11:00 a.m.
320 West 500 North: New Recreation Center Site - next to Veterans Memorial Pool

Street Closures

Perhaps I should be more positive about the Utah Bicycle Tour that will be going through Provo.  After all, it might be fun to go cheer on the riders as they pass by on Thursday, August 11th. Did any of you tune in to the Tour de France last month?  Five of the teams that participated in that race will be racing through Provo this week.
However, it will affect the accessibility of streets and while they are on the east side of Provo, you should be aware of the closures in case your plans for the day take you that direction.
Streets affected by road and driveway closures from approximately 1:30 to 3:30 are:
• South State Street from Springville going North to 900 East;
• all of 900 East and proceeding down 2230 North to University Ave;
• North on University to 4800 North; 4800 North to 300 West;
• Race finishes at the Vivint complex at 4931 North 300 West.

The Tour of Utah bicycle stage race begins today, Tuesday, and if you want more information, check out their website: http://www.tourofutah.com/

Health Fair

Mountainlands Community Health Center is putting on a health fair for the neighborhood from 5 to 8 PM on August 24th at their Provo location at 900 East and State Street. This Health Fair is to introduce Mountainlands to the community and to show what services the Health Center provides.
The folks at Mountainlands plan to have booths performing health checks, a rock climbing wall, helmet safety, a Zumba demonstration, and more.
Mountainlands is a not-for-profit organization that provides a pharmacy and medical, dental, and mental health services in one convenient location. They serve those in need regardless of their ability to pay or their insurance status. They accept medicare, medicaid, SCHIP, and many other insurances, as well as those without insurance.

Details on the Night Out

The post on July 19th announced the National Night Out Against Crime on August 19th.  I have now received new details that I think should be passed on. It is as follows:

The Provo Police Department wishes to announce that they will be hosting a National Night Out Against Crime on August 2nd from 6-8 pm at the Kiwanis Park located at 820 North and 1100 East.  Everybody is invited to come and meet with their neighbors, to get know local police officers, firefighters, volunteers and leaders from their community.

Come and find out about crime prevention programs such as Mobile Watch, the Neighborhood Watch program and McGruff safe-houses.

All who live in Provo are invited to bring their bicycles and have them registered for free on this night. There are hundreds of bikes recovered every year that are never returned to the owners because they were never registered. It makes good sense, register your bike for free.

There will be fun and games for children, along with treats for all ages.  If you are lucky, you might even be served a hot-dog straight from the grill by our new Chief of Police, Chief Gregory!

Chief Gregory says:  "National Night Out provides an opportunity for our police department to continue to build relationships and partnerships with our citizens with a focus on crime prevention and crime reduction.  Our strongest and most important tool in reducing crime is our partnership with our community.  The Provo Police Department is dedicated to crime reduction through crime prevention, community-police partnerships, and problem-solving policing."

The National Association of Town Watch started the National Night Out program 28 years ago to heighten crime prevention awareness by generating support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; and to strengthen police-community partnerships.  Neighborhoods and cities around the country will hold similar events the same night.

Along with thousands of other cities nationwide, we encourage you to "turn on your porch lights" on August 2nd in support of our community's National Night Out.

Come out to this fun family event.  Let's all join in to help keep Provo safe.
